Tennis icon Serena Williams will play doubles at the Berlin Open next week with Czech player Karolina Muchova.

"It doesn't happen often that you get to play doubles with a player like that," Muchova told a press conference on Saturday confirming the rumours.

The 44-year-old Williams is expected in the German capital for the grass event over the weekend.

Her first appearance will still be a little while in coming.

"Monday is rather unlikely, it will work out on Tuesday or Wednesday," said tournament director Markus Zoecke.

Just under two weeks ago, US star Williams announced her return from retirement in doubles, sending the tennis world into a stir.

The 23-times Grand Slam singles champion made a winning comeback at Queen's in London on Tuesday alongside Victoria Mboko, sealing a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 first-round victory over Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe.

But her return was cut short after doubles partner Mboko was forced withdrew with a knee problem.

Former top German player Andrea Petkovic said: "Serena played superbly at Queen's. She's not simply coming back to see what it's like. She's in top shape."

Williams is surely set to appear at Wimbledon next month and a singles comeback at some point has not been ruled out.
