Serian API reading declines to 323 but still considered hazardous

SHAH ALAM, Sept 5 - The Air Pollution Index (API) reading at the Serian IPD monitoring station in Sarawak is down to 323 as of 11am, though it is still at a hazardous level.

A check on the Environment Department’s API Management System (APIMS) portal showed three other areas in Sarawak with very unhealthy readings - Kuching (267), Samarahan (254) and Sri Aman (260).

Other areas in Sarawak with unhealthy readings are Bintulu (195), Samalaju (196), Mukah (186), Miri ILP (187), Sarikei (177), Miri (179), Sibu (170), Limbang (159), and Kapit (150).

Labuan had a reading of 166.

In Sabah, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu (156), Kimanis (166), and Kota Kinabalu (152) had unhealthy readings.

Also with unhealthy readings were Johor’s Larkin (154), Batu Pahat (157), Kluang (153), Pasir Gudang (145), Segamat (154), Tangkak (155), and Kota Tinggi (128), as well as Pahang’s Rompin (140) and Balok Baru Kuantan (143).

Selangor’s Johan Setia recorded a 156 API, while Melaka’s Bukit Rambai was at 155 and Alor Gajah at 131.

Yesterday, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, declared an emergency in Serian due to the worsening haze, when the local API reading soared past 500.

API readings are categorised as follows:

  • 0-50: Good

  • 51-100: Moderate

  • 101-200: Unhealthy

  • 201-300: Very unhealthy

  • Over 300: Hazardous
