This is one of those miniseries that one day may build itself a cult following. Mark my words. Even after faithfully going through four seasons of ten episodes each, totalling almost 40 hours of viewing time, I am still perplexed. I am still trying to find a plausible explanation of how the group of people got trapped in a time warp. One moment they were driving on a lonely highway, only to see a fallen tree across the road. In the next moment, they find themselves going around in loops after making a U-turn.
Things become complicated as zombies start roaming as the sun sets and go on a killing spree. The crux of the miniseries is how the people protect each other, outwit the zombies, identify cues around them, and map out their escape.
It is not as easy as just finding the reset button, pressing the eject button and getting out of the conundrum. There appear to be clues, dead ends and false leads which bring them back to where they started. To top it all, the zombies somehow get their kind to infiltrate and move amongst the non-zombies.
Surprisingly, there is a power supply with no power lines and a water supply with no water pipes. There is a food supply. There is a big collection of people who carry a heavy load of emotional baggage with them. People somehow organise themselves and try to get life going.
The whole show is an analogy for the human path here on Earth: how humans arrive with no idea what they are here for. Armed only with a consciousness that questions everything and a cognitive ability to think out a rational purpose and the path it should lead to, he moves on. Throughout the series, we are told of virgin births, reincarnation, intuition, premonition, and more, none of which have easy explanations.
Season 5 is said to be the final season, which is set to explain the whole conundrum. I doubt it. This would not be one of those that end with a bummer, just left without a comprehensive explanation and hinting at the possibility of another season.
