Kota Kinabalu: The setting up of former State athletes associations will enable the Youth and Sports Ministry to assist the welfare of their members more efficiently.
Datuk Ellron Angin made the call in his speech during the Sabah Ex-State Footballers Association annual dinner held at a leading hotel here on Saturday.
The association led by Datuk James Wong was established in 2016 for the purpose of looking after the welfare of its 137 members who are aged 45 above.
The minister said former footballers who have made the State proud deserved to be recognised for their contribution in the national and international stage.
“As one of the former athletes myself, I understand very well what these athletes will face once they are retired and are no longer active in the sport. Therefore, I will do my best through the ministry to help those who are affected,” said the former national sprinter.
He also revealed that the EPF contribution programme for State athletes will be implemented this year.
“The programme was first proposed as the result of concern for State athletes who are about to retire from the sport, and the contribution will be continued once they venture into new career paths,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ellron with other top ranked officials from the Ministry are set to meet up with Federal Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh in Putrajaya today (Monday).
