A SEVEN-year-old boy remains in critical condition and sedated after suffering serious head injuries in a brutal hammer attack allegedly carried out by his uncle in Pasar Jelawat, Kelantan.
The boy, Muhammad Ammar, received over 50 stitches to his head following the assault on Thursday. Doctors at Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM) have not yet performed surgery due to ongoing bleeding from multiple skull fractures.
His father, Muhammad Badrul Remli, 31, said the family is clinging to hope as the boy’s condition remains precarious.
“His skull is reportedly 50 per cent fractured, with swelling on the brain. So far, they have only stitched the wounds. We are just praying for a miracle,” he said when met at HPUSM in Kubang Kerian.
The child was initially brought to Hospital Bachok around 5.30pm on Thursday before being transferred to HPUSM for further treatment. According to his father, Muhammad Ammar showed a faint sign of response by slightly moving his head on Friday evening.
The victim’s aunt, who was initially detained to assist in the investigation, was released by police at 4pm yesterday. She reportedly told family members that the suspect — her husband — had been restless and unable to sleep for two weeks prior to the incident.
“No one expected this to happen. We are still in shock,” said Muhammad Badrul, calling on the public to pray for his son’s recovery.
The attack took place in a shoplot residence in Pasar Jelawat. The 46-year-old suspect fled to Pantai Melawi, approximately three kilometres from the scene, where he was later found dead on the beach.
Police are investigating the case under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon, and Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001. - September 27, 2025
