Several federal ministries have been placed under close watch by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) following the discovery of weaknesses and irregularities in government procurement processes. The move signals an intensified push by the anti-graft agency to stem financial leakages and protect public funds amid growing concern over inefficiencies in public sector spending.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said investigations had identified procurement-related issues within a number of ministries, although he did not disclose which ones were involved. He explained that procurement remained one of the most vulnerable areas for revenue losses due to its scale and complexity, making it a key focus for enforcement agencies. According to him, weaknesses in procurement systems often result in significant leakages that ultimately burden the state and taxpayers.
Azam stressed that MACC would take firm and proactive action in response to these findings, describing such measures as part of the commission’s duty to safeguard national finances. He noted that MACC’s efforts to address corruption and financial misconduct were not new, pointing out that the commission had been engaged in long-term institutional “clean-up” work since 2009. This ongoing process, he said, reflected the agency’s commitment to improving governance and accountability across government institutions.
He also highlighted cooperation from certain ministries, citing the Ministry of Defence as an example. Azam said the ministry had shown openness by allowing MACC officers to be stationed there to assist in examining procurement practices. This collaboration, he explained, was aimed at identifying gaps, strengthening internal controls, and preventing further losses rather than assigning blame. He welcomed such cooperation, describing it as a positive step toward transparent and responsible management of public resources.
By working directly with ministries, the commission seeks to address systemic weaknesses that allow leakages to occur, especially in large-scale procurement involving contracts, tenders, and asset purchases. He noted that these efforts were essential to ensure that public money is spent efficiently and reaches its intended purpose.
Azam reiterated that the commission would continue to act decisively wherever evidence of leakage or misconduct emerged, regardless of whether such actions proved unpopular. He maintained that protecting national finances and upholding integrity in public administration remained central to MACC’s mandate.
