On the third day of their indefinite strike, employees of the Sewa Kendra Mulazam Union stopped work and staged a dharna outside the gate of the District Administrative Complex here on Friday.

Addressing the protesters, Sewa Kendra Mulazam Union District President Gursewak Singh Lalu Ghuman and Vice-President Jagdish Singh said the employees had been demanding equal pay for equal work and that their minimum salary be fixed at Rs 40,000.

They said the union was also demanding an end to the contract system and the regularisation of all employees who have completed 10 years of service, in line with the instructions of the Punjab government.

The demands of the Sewa Kendra Mulazam Union were also supported by Akali Dal Waris Punjab District President Bhai Chamkaur Singh, PSMSU District President Gursewak Singh and several other fraternal organisations.

Union leaders said that if the government attempted to suppress their movement by force, it would prove costly for the government.
