Kota Kinabalu: Shafie said he has instructed the party secretary-general to lodge a police report into two instances of fake news.
One was a purported letter claiming that the party had withdrawn from the Unity Government, while the other claimed that he had appealed for an individual to be released from Immigration detention.
“The party is awaiting a report from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) before further action is taken.
“At the same time, we have instructed our lawyers to take civil action against those we suspect,” he said.
On the effectiveness of legislation governing social media, Shafie said having an Act alone was insufficient without proper enforcement.
“It is useless if the Act is not enforced,” he said. “The party’s official position should only come through its authorised leadership and official communication channels,” he said.
Warisan’s branch meetings are scheduled from 24 July to 25 Aug this year, followed by divisional meetings from 11 Sept to 5 Oct with the party’s annual general assembly set for 30 and 31 Oct.
The assembly will be held in Sandakan, with the party choosing the city as a gesture of appreciation to areas outside Kota Kinabalu, where previous assemblies had been held, and to recognise Sandakan’s importance to Warisan.
The party will also hold its internal elections at all levels following the general assembly as part of its preparations for the coming election.
