Lionel Messi made World Cup history for Argentina on Sunday, and Shakira’s reaction captured just how much the moment meant across the football world.
The Colombian superstar took to Instagram after Messi scored twice against Austria to become the leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
Messi had already scored a hat-trick against Algeria in Argentina’s opening game of the 2026 World Cup, with his third goal bringing him level with Miroslav Klose on 16 goals. His double against Austria then moved him clear at the top on 18.

Shakira’s message after Lionel Messi’s record-breaking night
Shortly after Argentina’s win, Shakira posted a tribute to Lionel Messi on her Instagram story as praise poured in from around the world.
She wrote: “Very proud of you, Leo, and of everything you’re achieving for your family, your country, and all Latinos!!! Your commitment and dedication are an example to many. Keep shining!” ✨❤️
It was a heartfelt message from someone who has seen much of Messi’s journey up close. During her relationship with former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, Shakira regularly watched Messi play a key role in the club’s most successful era.
Though she and Pique split in 2022, her admiration for Messi clearly has not faded. That made her reaction feel even more notable as he continued to rewrite the record books for Argentina.
Messi moves clear of Klose and Mbappe in World Cup goal race
Messi now stands alone on 18 World Cup goals, moving ahead of Klose and Kylian Mbappe after his latest scoring display for Argentina.
Mbappe has also climbed the all-time standings during the tournament after scoring his second brace of the competition against Iraq. The France star now sits level with Klose on 16 goals, two behind Messi.
That gives the record race another layer, especially with both Messi and Mbappe still active in the tournament. For now, though, the Argentina captain has the advantage after another decisive World Cup performance.
The achievement adds another landmark to Messi’s career, but Shakira’s message showed why it carried meaning beyond the numbers.
For many fans across Latin America, this was not just another record, it was another reminder of the legacy Messi continues to build.
