The municipal corporation has temporarily closed the Shakti Nagar Park after an old water tank located inside its premises was found to be in a dangerous state, raising concerns over public safety.
The water tank was constructed nearly 50 years ago, and has now become structurally weak. Large concrete slabs from the upper portion of the tank have started falling, posing a serious threat to visitors and area residents.
Senior Congress leader Vikas Soni had highlighted the issue after a slab fell down on Saturday. After this, MC officials inspected the overhead water tank at the park, and decided to immediately shut the park to avoid any untoward incident.
The MC has issued a short-term tender notice for the dismantling and removal of the old tank.
The demolition work will be carried out mechanically in the coming days.
Late on Sunday night, ACP Surinder Singh, officials from the D Division police station, and municipal corporation teams visited the park, and inspected the tank.
Officials also interacted with residents living around the park, before sealing the area and restricting public entry.
Authorities said the park would remain closed until the unsafe structure was completely removed, and the area was declared safe for the public.
