Shareda urges long-term port expansion

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Shareda) is calling for a long-term strategy to upgrade Sabah’s port infrastructure, warning that current congestion could hinder economic growth.

President Datuk Johnny Wong said short-term fixes like adding equipment and manpower may ease delays, but are not sustainable.

He urged the government to expand existing facilities and develop new ports, including a proposed deep-sea port in Kudat, to reduce pressure on Sapanggar Bay Container Port.

While acknowledging the high cost of such projects, he stressed their necessity for future demand.

On housing, Wong said developers remain committed to building affordable homes and view current regulations as workable. However, rising material costs may impact future projects and require further review.
