See art in many forms with Sharjah Art Foundation this Autumn
Sharjah Art Foundation has unveiled an exciting autumn 2024 programme following a successful spring. Among the highlights is the debut survey of Māori artist Emily Karaka. This exhibition, curated by Hoor Al Qasimi and Megan Tamati-Quennell, also explores themes of cultural clash and colonialism within New Zealand.
The Highlights
Also featured is “Between Circles and Constellations” by Bouchra Khalili, highlighting narratives of marginalised communities through deeply poetic installations. This exhibition, co-produced with MACBA, Barcelona, underlines Khalili’s commitment to documenting stories of collective emancipation and radical citizenship.
Artist William Kentridge takes centre stage with “A Shadow of a Shadow,” the first exhibition dedicated solely to his theatrical works. Curated by Hoor Al Qasimi and Tarek Abou El Fetouh, this retrospective at Bait Al Serkal delves into Kentridge’s provocative critiques of authoritarianism across 23 performances spanning decades.
Intellectual Art
Meanwhile, “The Search for an Open Enigma” pays homage to Brazilian artist Antonio Dias, known for his boundary-defying artworks addressing socio-political issues. Curated by Hoor Al Qasimi, this retrospective at Al Hamriyah Studios traces Dias’ evolution from the 1960s to the early 2000s.
The Foundation’s annual events are also set to captivate, including the Sharjah Film Platform, Perform Sharjah, Focal Point, and Vantage Point Sharjah. These events celebrate independent cinema, cross-disciplinary performances, art publications, and photography, fostering a vibrant cultural exchange in Sharjah’s urban landscape.
Art In Poetry
Vantage Point Sharjah 12, inspired by Mahmoud Darwish’s poetry, explores collective memory and empathy through the lens of emerging photographers. Perform Sharjah promises dynamic performances across the city, engaging with Sharjah’s heritage and public spaces.
Last but not least, Sharjah Film Platform 7 returns with an array of international films competing for prestigious awards, alongside screenings and tributes to pioneering regional filmmakers. Focal Point, the Foundation’s art book fair, rounds out the season with a showcase of independent publishers and workshops, enriching the cultural discourse.
