On June 16, Nor Afiza Zainuddin, 41, left her mother’s house in Taman Mewah, Kamunting, Taiping, telling her family she was heading to a job interview at a hotel in Kuala Kangsar. She did not come home that night and her phone was switched off. When her family checked with the hotel, they were told no interview had been scheduled for that date.
Twelve days with no news
As reported by Sinar Harian, her brother Ahmad Zulhilmi, 34, said the family had been trying to reach her repeatedly without success. The first police report was lodged at Balai Polis Kamunting on June 18, followed by a second report at IPD Taiping to escalate the matter.
For days, the family had no leads until June 21, when a village resident found her white Perodua Axia at a recreational area in Batu Hampar, near Padang Rengas.
The car was in good condition; keys and personal belongings were still inside. Nor Afiza was not there.
“We tried calling many times but could not get through. Until now, there is no news at all,” Zulhilmi told Sinar Harian at the time.
The family shared her contact number publicly and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
Earlier that year, Nor Afiza had recently divorced and had been living with her family in Taiping. She is a mother of two daughters.
She came forward herself
On June 28 at around 3pm, Nor Afiza walked into a police station in Kajang, Selangor and lodged a report herself, directly denying allegations that she had been abducted. As reported by FMT, Taiping police chief Ariffridzuan Ezahar confirmed she is safe, in good health and unharmed.
“She explained that she had left home on June 16 of her own free will without any coercion from any individual,” Ariffridzuan said.
Through the report, Nor Afiza made clear she did not wish to be disturbed by her family or any other parties. Police have since advised the public not to speculate or spread unverified information about the case.
A private matter, now closed
Whatever brought Nor Afiza to leave on June 16 is something she has chosen to keep to herself, and she has every right to do that. What the twelve days showed is how fast a missing person’s case spreads online, how much speculation is said before anything is confirmed, and how hard it is to walk any of that back once it has started. Nor Afiza is safe, and she has asked to be left alone.
