The ‘pakka morcha’ at the Cooperative Sugar Mill, Sheron, entered its fifth day on Monday. The agitation, organised by farmer organisations affiliated with the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha and the ‘Cooperative Sugar Mill Bachao Morcha’, is raising concerns over the proposed transfer of ownership of the mill to other departments.

Leaders of farmer organisations, including Harjinder Singh Tanda, Mahavir Singh Gill, Kuldeep Singh Manochahal, Nachhattar Singh Pannu, Tarsem Singh Luhar and Jassa Singh Kadgill, addressed the gathering of protesting farmers. They asserted that they would not allow the transfer of ownership of the mill to any other institution. They said the mill had been built on farmers’ shares and, therefore, its ownership could not be transferred without their consent.

Speakers also condemned disruptions in power supply amid the prevailing heat conditions, and demanded that electricity distribution in the region be regulated.
