In a shocking and tragic incident, a senior police officer has been tentatively charged with the murder of 17-year-old schoolboy Zaharif Affendi Zamrie.

The incident took place during a car chase near Zaharif's school in Meru, raising concerns and sending shockwaves throughout the community. The officer in question, Nazri Abdul Razak, a deputy superintendent from the Kedah police contingent headquarters, appeared in court before magistrate S Punitha this morning.

As the charge was read out, Nazri simply nodded in acknowledgement. Due to the gravity of the case, no plea was recorded at this stage as it falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Formal charges and a plea will be made when the case is transferred to the High Court. Nazri, who works in the criminal investigation department, displayed calmness throughout the short legal proceeding.

The charge against him is outlined under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which accuses him of killing Zaharif on December 15 between 12.05pm and 12.40pm at Jalan Taman Jati 1 near SMK Jati in Meru. If convicted, Nazri faces a potential punishment of death or imprisonment ranging from 30 to 40 years, accompanied by a minimum of 12 whippings.

The court has scheduled February 7 for the next mention of the case, pending the arrival of the chemist's report. Deputy public prosecutor Azlina Rasdi led the prosecution, while Nazri was represented by lawyer Jacky Loi. Nazri was taken into custody on the same day as Zaharif's untimely death. Previously, it was reported that Zaharif was riding his motorcycle when a car pursued him for approximately 1 kilometer.

Tragically, the car collided with Zaharif's motorcycle, causing him to fall and be dragged for nearly 5 meters. Making every effort to evade the media, Nazri arrived at the courthouse through a separate entrance and left in a police convoy consisting of six cars. During the court proceedings, the emotional toll of Zaharif's loss was evident as his brother, Zarul Fitri, 29, was seen in tears.

This distressing case emphasizes the need for a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served for Zaharif and his grieving family, while also addressing any concerns regarding the conduct and accountability of senior police officers. The court process will provide an opportunity for the truth to be unveiled and for justice to prevail in this tragic incident that has shaken the community.
