Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah shooting team is setting its sights on winning at least three medals, including a gold, during the Selangor Malaysia Games (Sukma).
Team manager Jeffrey Wong shared that their focus is on the women’s pistol, men’s rifle and women’s rifle events to be held from August 17 to 22.
“We are targeting three medals at this Sukma, while the exact colour of the medals can’t be promised, securing at least one gold is our primary goal, particularly in the women’s pistol event, based on the target set by Sabah Sports Council (MSN).”As the team prepared to depart from the Kota Kinabalu International Airport on Friday, Wong revealed that training has been rigorous and ongoing since the conclusion of the last Sukma in Sarawak two years ago.
“Our preparations started right after the last Sukma, with consistent weekly training sessions. Over the past two months, our athletes have undergone intensive training for six days each week, focusing on morning, afternoon, and evening sessions,” he said.
He added that the athletes also attended a training camp in Kuching, Sarawak to adjust to the electronic target systems that will be implemented during this year’s games.
“We held small training and competitions with the Sarawak team to help our athletes familiarise themselves with the electronic target system, which is a significant change from previous Sukma events.”Meanwhile, a team manager, three coaches, and a gun escort will accompany the 11-member contingent featuring four men and seven women.
They are set to participate in the men’s pistol, women’s pistol, men’s rifle and women’s rifle events, as well as in the new 50-metre prone event for both men and women.
