A shot was fired after two groups exchanged heated arguments over “dangerously” overtaking a two-wheeler near a petrol station in Sector 20 last night.

The minor dispute escalated after three youths allegedly reached the PG accommodation of the other group and vandalised their bike. One of them opened fire from a countrymade pistol while fleeing from the spot. The police have arrested Jai Kishan, a resident of Sector 30, who works as a delivery executive. He was accompanied by Abhijeet and a juvenile when the incident took place. According to the police, Kishan was consuming alcohol with Abhijeet and the juvenile at the Sector 30 liquor vend. They later reached the Sector 20 petrol station to get fuel. They had an argument with Rajeev, a resident of Sector 33, and his friend Sunil, who were riding a bike, over dangerous overtaking near the petrol station. As tempers ran high, passersby intervened and pacified both groups.

However, the verbal spat soon escalated into a scuffle, during which Kishan and his friends were allegedly assaulted by the other group.

Kishan and his associates followed the other group to their PG accommodation in Sector 20. They left the place and later returned with a countymade pistol. They damaged the two-wheeler with a rod. When Kishan was caught by local residents, Abhijeet fired a shot and escaped with the juvenile. No one was hit. Meanwhile, teams from the Sector 19 and Sector 26 police stations, along with the DSP (East), reached the spot. Forensic teams collected evidence. During the investigation, the police recovered the pistol.

The accused told the police that the weapon was purchased from Burail village.

The police have registered a case against Kishan and his associates under relevant Sections of the BNS and the Arms Act.
