Kota Kinabalu: Students have been urged to show their love for the country through actions by respecting the Jalur Gemilang, obeying the law, valuing peace and harmony and becoming useful citizens.

Kian Kok Middle School Board Chairman Datuk Clement Yeh said Independence Day is not merely a date on the calendar but a historic testimony to the struggles and sacrifices of Malaysians of all races, religions and backgrounds.

“Kian Kok requires all local students to sit for the SPM, with a Malay Language pass rate of over 95 per cent each year. This shows our commitment to the national language,” he said.

Clement was speaking when the 2025 Independence Journey Convoy, jointly organised by the Sabah Information Department and Kota Kinabalu MP Datuk Chan Foong Hin’s service centre, made a stop at the school on Thursday.

Chan, who is also Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, said independence must also mean freedom from outdated mindsets, unjust systems and social inequalities.

“The spirit of independence should be passed on through education and understanding, not intimidation or bullying. Sabah’s culture of diversity and harmony will never tolerate acts that divide society,” he said.

The convoy, themed Malaysia Madani: Caring for the People, featured activities such as community feasts, welfare visits, skills training and government outreach programmes.

The event ended with students, teachers and guests chanting “Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! Long live Malaysia!”Kian Kok said it was honoured to be chosen as one of the convoy’s nationwide stops and reaffirmed its commitment to trilingual education and nurturing patriotism among students.
