SIGA calls for independent governance review of Fifa amid escalating football crisis

GENEVA: The Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA) held an extraordinary leadership meeting on Aug 5 to address the escalating governance crisis surrounding Fifa, and its far-reaching implications for global sport.

The emergency summit brought together SIGA members, committed supporters, partners, and senior stakeholders to confront mounting questions of institutional accountability, transparency, consultation, and public trust. Participants adopted a unified stance, demanding that independent scrutiny and governance certification become standard practice across all sporting bodies.

The intervention comes amidst intense international media scrutiny over FIFA’s recent administration. Global football has been rocked by the collapse of a controversial US$20 billion privatisation plan, known as the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE), which sought to sell off commercial rights for future World Cup tournaments to private investors.

Although pitched with promises of US$20 million one-off disbursements to each of FIFA’s 211 member associations, the proposal sparked fierce political backlash, including from Uefa, and condemnation from prominent figures across the sport.

Pressure on Fifa president Gianni Infantino has further intensified following revelations regarding confidential discussions during the 2021 European breakaway attempt, alongside criticism from continental confederations over a lack of prior consultation.

While Fifa’s senior leadership issued a formal apology acknowledging procedural errors and declared the privatisation project withdrawn, critics argue that internal damage-control measures fall far short of genuine reform.

In line with its decade-long mission, SIGA called on Fifa to voluntarily submit to a fully independent review of its governance and decision-making processes. Such a review would evaluate the structural integrity of the world’s football governing body’s framework, identify systemic vulnerabilities, and establish evidence-based reforms — a process SIGA stands ready to facilitate.

In a statement, SIGA emphasised that this offer of independent oversight extends equally to continental confederations, national football associations, leagues, clubs, and governing bodies across all sporting disciplines.

“Public confidence can no longer rest on internal self-assessment or peer review; it requires unassailable independent scrutiny and credible external certification. The SIGA Universal Standards on Sport Integrity provide the benchmark for these evaluations, while the implementation of subsequent reforms can be verified through the SIGA Independent Rating and Verification System (SIRVS),” it added.

The meeting concluded with stakeholders endorsing SIGA’s primary objective: “Every Sport, in Every Country, SIGA Certified.”
