The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has instructed the police to investigate a fatal road accident in Simpang Renggam, Johor, under provisions for both murder and reckless driving causing death. The horrific crash resulted in five fatalities.
Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar stated that the AGC will thoroughly review the full police investigation report before deciding on the final charges against the suspect.
Strict enforcement failing to curb dangerous driving
“We have instructed that this case be investigated under provisions for murder and reckless driving causing death to road users,” he said, as reported by Sin Chew Daily.
He added that the AGC is deeply concerned about the tragedy. He expressed disappointment that despite strict actions taken in previous fatal road accidents, including charging drivers with murder in certain cases, such measures have still not been effective in curbing dangerous driving behaviour.
The fatal crash
The accident occurred at about 1 PM on Monday (1 June) along Kilometre 27 of Jalan Renggam–Simpang Renggam in Johor, involving a total of five vehicles.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that two brothers, aged 19 and 22, were racing or driving recklessly at high speed. The 22-year-old older brother, who was driving a BMW 530e, lost control of his vehicle and veered into the opposite lane, causing a crash involving a Toyota Vios, a Proton Wira, a Mercedes-Benz and a Perodua Alza.
Four occupants of the Toyota Vios died at the scene, while the driver of the speeding BMW 530e succumbed to severe injuries while being transported to the hospital.
On Wednesday morning (3 June), the suspect was brought back to court for a remand extension. According to a subsequent report by Sin Chew Daily, none of the suspect’s family members was spotted at the courthouse.
