Teenager who drove recklessly, causing death remanded for further investigation

A TEENAGER who drove a Mercedes-Benz recklessly and dangerously, causing an accident that claimed the lives of a family of four on Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam, Kluang, last Monday, was remanded for another day at the Magistrate's Court today.

The remand extension order was granted by Judge Mujib Saroji after the suspect's two-day detention period for investigation under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 ended today.

Kluang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh, said that with the suspect's remand period extended, they will refer the investigation papers to the Johor State Prosecution Office (PPNJ) today.

"We are awaiting further instructions from the PPNJ for further action," he said.

Earlier, the suspect, who is also a 19-year-old student at a university in Singapore, arrived at the Magistrate's Court in Kluang at 8.30 am accompanied by police.

The man was arrested after an accident involving five vehicles that also claimed the lives of four members of a family who were travelling in a Toyota Vios.

The suspect was an individual who drove dangerously with his 22-year-old brother, driving a BMW 530e, causing the accident at 1.15 pm.

The accident also caused the death of the suspect's brother.

Yesterday, the suspect was brought to the Batu Pahat Magistrate's Court before being granted a two-day remand.

In the incident, four members of the family, Semek Mat Soh, 73, his daughter and son-in-law, Nor Azlina Abd Latip, 33 and Aiman ​​Mohd Rashid, 36; and Nur Airish Syifa Sidek, 10, died.

The deceased was reported to be travelling from Melaka to return to Kota Tinggi. – June 3, 2026
