Getting adequate sleep is essential for overall well-being, yet many people struggle to fall asleep easily.

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of wellness, offers several natural remedies that are believed to calm the body and prepare the mind for rest. Among the most popular are warm herbal drinks made with ingredients known for their relaxing properties.

One such remedy is the comforting Moon Drink, a traditional blend prepared with milk, ashwagandha, cardamom and cinnamon.

Ashwagandha, a widely used Ayurvedic herb, is valued for its stress-relieving and sleep-supporting benefits. Cinnamon may help relax the body, while cardamom’s gentle aroma is believed to soothe restlessness and aid digestion. Warm milk, naturally rich in tryptophan, can support the production of melatonin, the hormone linked to sleep regulation.

To prepare the drink, heat one cup of milk and mix in one teaspoon of ashwagandha powder. Add half a teaspoon each of cardamom and cinnamon powder, stir well and serve warm before bedtime.

Another well-known Ayurvedic bedtime beverage is Haldi Doodh, often referred to as Golden Milk.

This nourishing drink combines milk with turmeric, nutmeg and saffron. Turmeric is traditionally recognised for its anti-inflammatory and immunity-supporting qualities, while nutmeg and saffron are associated with relaxation and emotional balance.

For this recipe, warm one cup of milk and add one teaspoon of turmeric, half a teaspoon of nutmeg powder and a few strands of saffron. Stir thoroughly and enjoy warm. The drink is known for its soothing effect, making it a popular night-time ritual for many.
