Former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer, whose resignation as an MP triggered the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, congratulated his successor, Sagal Abdi-Wali.
Writing on X he said: “Brilliant result. Congratulations to my friend @Sagal_AW, I know you are a brilliant champion for our communities and will be a fantastic MP.”
The Camden Council leader won 12,292 votes while Green Party leader Mr Polanski came in second place with 8,928 votes.
While speaking of her desire to work with prime minister Andy Burnham to address the wider housing crisis, she said: “Homelessness is the issue that first drove me into politics, and no-one should be sleeping on the streets, and no family should be left without security in the home.”
The turnout of 38.76 per cent in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election was relatively low, trailing the 47.62 per cent seen in Gorton and Denton in February, which Hannah Spencer won for the Greens, taking the seat from Labour.
