Prominent lawyer and human rights activist Siti Kasim has criticized the Madani government for allegedly suppressing critical voices on social media, warning that such actions only reinforce the perception that the administration is struggling to handle dissent.

Expressing frustration over TikTok’s removal of some of her videos, Siti argued that freedom of expression must be upheld, even if the government finds certain opinions disagreeable or uncomfortable. In a passionate YouTube video, she questioned the authorities’ efforts to curb criticism.

Despite receiving criticism herself, Siti emphasized that she does not censor opposing views unless they resort to personal attacks or insults. She accused the Communications Ministry of taking down her videos simply because they were critical of the government.

One of the removed videos featured her speech at a media conference on non-Muslim voices organized by the Global Human Rights Federation (GHRF), which had gained 136,000 views. Another video titled "What’s Wrong with Our Government?" had reached 190,000 viewers before its removal.

Siti did not hold back in her criticism of Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, claiming he had abandoned his activist roots in favor of defending the government's actions. “You used to be an activist, but I don't think you follow your conscience any longer,” she remarked.

According to TikTok’s transparency report, the Malaysian government made 2,606 content removal requests in the first half of 2024—the highest among all governments during that period. This marked a nearly 40% increase from the previous six months and a staggering rise compared to just 340 requests in early 2023.

Siti acknowledged that there are limits to free speech, but she questioned why the government appeared particularly sensitive to content criticizing its administration or religious extremism. She emphasized to respect the boundaries to free expression, but her concerns were legitimate.

She further pointed out that more of her posts have been taken down under the 28-month-old Madani administration than under previous governments, regardless of their performance. Despite this, she remained resolute in her stance.

“On my part, I’ll not be deterred from speaking up … they can try whatever they want or however they want.” she declared.
