Without getting any scholarship, Professor Siva Muthaly saved his money to complete his undergraduate and post-graduate in the United States. Later completed his Phd part-time at Monash University, Australia whilst being a full-time academic.

Working as a waiter, security guard, student counselor, and library assistant, Professor Siva from Petaling Jaya financed his tertiary education in the USA.

He has been teaching for 33 years in Australia (Monash, University of Newcastle, Swinburne, and RMIT) USA (Kennesaw State University and Etown College), and was Dean at APU in Malaysia.

Academic by nature, and a lecturer by profession, Siva's commitment to his students won him the "Teacher of the Year" Inaugural Postgraduate Teaching Award from Newcastle University's Postgraduate Student Association (NUPSA).

Siva's teaching philosophy is based on the Sanskrit phrase "Nishkarma Karma”, which means selfless action without any expectation of the fruits of the action.

“We are in academia for the students; teaching is only the first step in working with students. As academics, our satisfaction should be seen through the successful career progression of our students”.

Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, Siva came to Australia in 1990 to commence his academic career at Monash University as a Senior Lecturer in Marketing. As a full-time academic, he pursued his PhD (part-time) in International Marketing and International Business at Monash University, Melbourne.

Inspired by his parents’ encouragement, support, and enthusiasm, Siva aspired to greener educational pastures abroad.

He completed the four-year undergraduate degree in two and half years (with High Honours in Business Administration) from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, while working odd jobs self-financing his education.

Siva undertook his master’s in economics from Pittsburg State University in Kansas before returning to Malaysia, where he worked as a financial controller and a part-time lecturer for nearly a decade.

Finding lecturing more appealing, Siva took to teaching as a full-time career.

Siva also credits his former head of department Datuk Dr Parmjit Singh at Asia Pacific University Malaysia for encouraging him to pursue teaching and a doctorate in Australia.

Professor Siva is currently an Adjunct Professor at Western Sydney University and the Course Coordinator – Master of Business Research, at the School of Business at Melbourne Institute of Technology.

He was also Dean of the Faculty of Business and Management, at Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU - Malaysia) from January 2016 to 2018, and Executive Dean at Kent Institute Australia from January 2019 to August 2019.

Siva has carried out several high-impact marketing consulting projects across many industries and organisations.

Some of Siva’s consumer behaviour research collaborations in Australia were: Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific; TFG Australia; Department of Primary Industries; Pilkington Australia; CPA Australia; Australia-Malaysia Business Council – Victoria, and Orica Chemicals (Environment Conservation).

As of 2023, Siva has had over 125 published journal and conference papers, which have appeared in indexed journals such as the European Journal of Marketing, and the British Food Journal.

Other journals prominent are The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems and the International Journal of Educational Management.

He has also published applied research papers in Marketing and Logistics, the International Journal of Education Management, the Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising, Marketing Bulletin, the Journal of Sport Marketing and Sponsorship, the Journal of Asia Pacific Business, and Sports Marketing Quarterly.
