Dog owners in Switzerland have been left in shock. Six dogs have died at Lake Neuchâtel in just 48 hours. Most worryingly, a similar tragedy could happen at any time in other countries too!
Summer, sunshine, and a refreshing dip... that is how we all picture the perfect warm day. But the tragic events in the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel are a stark reminder to stay cautious. For six dogs, a swim in Lake Neuchâtel turned into a tragedy. The cause? Blue-green algae!
Police take immediate action
Because humans, and especially children, are also at risk, the local police immediately banned swimming in this popular lake. Recent hot, sunny weather has caused an explosive algae bloom, making the water highly toxic at the moment. Warnings have already been issued for several other Swiss lakes.

Dog owners in Germany and Austria are also being urged to stay vigilant, as similar deaths could easily happen there too. While cyanobacteria may ”only” cause mild symptoms in adults, their toxins can be highly dangerous for children and dogs. Drinking or swimming in contaminated water can lead to liver damage or even death.
Any water that smells unpleasant, looks cloudy and light brown, or has a greenish-blue oily film on the surface, must be avoided at all costs.
