KUDAT: A skipper and his crew member, aged 32 and 35 respectively, were detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for suspicious cargo documentation and questionable crew identification during an operation in local waters, here, Thursday.

Kudat Maritime Zone Director Hasbullah Omar said preliminary investigations suggest violations of the Supply Control Act 1961 and Immigration Act 1959/63.

The enforcement team also seized controlled goods, including 35 bundles of sugar worth RM2,394, 38 boxes of flour worth RM1,140 and 50 boxes of cooking oil worth RM2,125Hasbullah said the agency would continue intensifying patrols and enforcement to curb illegal activities in national waters, especially around Kudat.

He urged the public to report any smuggling or maritime crimes by contacting the Kudat Maritime Zone Operations Centre at 088-611858 or via the emergency line 999.
