LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a fishing vessel for breaching licence conditions during a patrol off Kunak waters, Monday.

Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali, said the anchovy fishing vessel was stopped at about 11.55am east of Pulau Timbun Mata during operations Op Pluto Timur and Op Tiris.

The vessel, operated by a local man and crewed by four Filipinos aged between 17 and 25, was found to be carrying around 8kg of fish.

Further checks revealed two violations: Fishing within less than 1.0 nautical mile from shore, breaching the Fisheries Act 1985 and failing to report a change of skipper, an offence under the Sabah Ports and Harbour Enactment.

“The vessel, its crew, and the catch have been brought to the Lahad Datu Maritime jetty for further action,” said Dzulfikhar, warning that stern measures will be taken against vessels violating licence terms.

He urged the public to report maritime crimes or emergencies via WhatsApp to the Lahad Datu Maritime Operations Centre at 016-9305727 or through MERS 999.
