Slaven Bilic back as Croatia boss almost 20 years on from famous Wembley win

  • Slaven Bilic has been appointed as the new coach of the Croatian national football team, marking his return to the role he previously held from 2006 to 2012.
  • His appointment follows the departure of Zlatko Dalic, who resigned after leading Croatia to a World Cup final in 2018 and a third-place finish in 2022.
  • Bilic, who famously led Croatia to a Wembley win over England in November 2007, expressed his readiness for the challenge, stating he is a more mature and experienced coach with the same motivation to maintain Croatia's strong footballing presence.
  • The national side recently exited the World Cup in the round of 32 after a controversial 2-1 loss to Portugal, with a last-gasp equaliser disallowed.
  • Bilic, who last coached Saudi club Al Fateh, aims to build the team towards Euro 2028, which will be co-hosted by the UK and Republic of Ireland.
