Sleeping with a fan on – the dos and don’ts according to an expert

  • The Sleep Geek and Bensons For Beds' resident sleep expert James Wilson says that fans can help you to fall asleep during hot weather by moving sweat and “stopping your immediate sleeping environment from getting too hot.”
  • Potential drawbacks of using at night include causing dryness in the eyes, nose, throat, and mouth, and circulating allergens like dust “which can be problematic for people with existing respiratory issues or allergies,” says Wilson.
  • He adds: “If you put a fan directly on your face and lay in one position all night, you will probably wake up with a stiff neck and shoulder, and you might wake up feeling worse than you would have done if you didn’t have the fan on in the first place.”
  • To minimise negative effects, Wilson advises positioning the fan “across the bedroom away from you”, turning it off before falling asleep, ensuring the fan is clean, and keeping a glass of water by the bedside.
  • He also suggests open communication with partners to find a compromise on fan usage and encourages individuals to experiment with different methods to discover what best aids their sleep.
