Two Hungarian nationals and a Slovak-Australian woman were killed in the Sydney attack, officials confirm, as tributes pour in for the victims.
SYDNEY: Two Hungarian nationals and a Slovak-Australian woman were among the 15 people killed in an attack on a Jewish celebration at Bondi Beach.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed the deaths of two Hungarian citizens on social media.
“Violence against religious communities is unacceptable,” he wrote in a post on X.
The Slovak foreign ministry earlier announced a dual Slovak-Australian citizen was also among those killed.
The country’s Jewish community identified the woman as Marika Pogany.
Slovak President Peter Pellegrini expressed the nation’s sorrow in a Facebook post.
Anton Pasternak, chairman of the Jewish community in Komarno, said he knew Pogany well from her regular visits.
“She was very active and pleasant. She was kind… It affects us very deeply,” he told AFP.
Pasternak added she was with a friend by the sea when she was shot.
Slovakia’s former president Zuzana Caputova described Pogany as a close friend in a tribute on Facebook.
She said Sydney had been “a refuge” for Pogany, “far from the evils of fascism and communism”.
“Apart from her mother and uncle, who returned from Auschwitz, all other members of this … family did not survive the Holocaust,” Caputova added. – AFP
