
RANAU: A 68-year-old Slovak man became the latest victim on Mount Kinabalu when he suffered difficulty in breathing on Tuesday.
Head of BBP Station Ranau, Ridwan bin Mohd Taib, said the incident happened at KM4 near Layang-Layang at about 11.40am.
“We received a call from the Malim Gunung at 11.46am through the Station Line and seven Mount Kinabalu Search and Rescue Team (Mosar) personnel, led by Operation Commander PBB Kuinten Gangok ,rushed to the scene.
“When Mosar arrived at the location situated 4km from their post, they found that there was a climber experiencing symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
“The Mosar team, with the help of Park SAR and Malim Gunung, gave initial treatment to the victim and he was brought down to Timpohon Gate on a stretcher,” he said.
According to Ridwan, the victim was later taken to the hospital using a vehicle from Sabah Parks and the operation ended at 4.40pm.
He added that the case on Tuesday became the third case of in March and also marks the Slovakian as the 11th victim on Kinabalu this year.
In January, two climbers were injured and February (five).
