KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Law Society (SLS) has welcomed the Federal Cabinet’s decision to separate the offices of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor.

SLS President Datuk Mohd Nazim Maduarin said on Wednesday the move would strengthen the rule of law, good governance, and public confidence in Malaysia’s justice system.

He said the fusion of both roles had long raised concerns over conflict between political interests and prosecutorial independence.

The reform, which requires constitutional amendments and new legislation, will establish a Public Prosecutor’s office empowered to act independently from the Attorney General’s advisory role to the government.

Nazim added that the SLS stands ready to work with the Malaysian Bar, Advocates Association of Sarawak, civil societies, and stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition and protect access to justice during the interim period.
