Starting this September, six additional highways in Malaysia will implement the Open Payment Toll Collection System, according to an announcement by Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. This move aims to further streamline toll payments for motorists, enhancing the convenience and efficiency of the toll collection process.

The Open Payment Toll Collection System was first introduced in September of the previous year, revolutionizing how toll payments are made. Prior to this system, drivers could only use Touch 'n Go, SmartTag, and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) methods to pay tolls. With the introduction of open payment, motorists now have the added flexibility of using credit and debit cards for their transactions, significantly broadening their payment options.

"By adopting the open payment system, we are making it easier and faster for motorists to pay tolls. This system not only provides more payment options but also reduces congestion at toll plazas," stated Nanta. He shared these updates while assessing the progress of the project at Section 7 of the West Coast Expressway, at the Assam Java-Tanjong Karang Junction, on Thursday, May 16th.

The six highways that will soon incorporate this open payment system are:

  1. North-South Expressway (PLUS): Extending from Thailand to Singapore, covering a distance of 770 kilometers.
  2. Seremban-Port Dickson Highway (SPDH): Spanning 23 kilometers.
  3. Linkedua Highway: Connecting Singapore and Malaysia, covering 47 kilometers.
  4. Grand Saga Highway: Stretching 11.5 kilometers between Cheras and Kajang.
  5. Grand Sepadu: Running from North Port to Bukit Raja in Klang, covering 17.5 kilometers.
  6. Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE): Connecting North and South Kuala Lumpur over a distance of 30 kilometers.

These highways will join the twelve that have already adopted the open payment system, increasing the total number of lanes utilizing this method to 35. This expansion is a critical part of the government's strategy to modernize toll collection and improve overall traffic flow.

The highways that previously adopted the open payment system include:

  • Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE)
  • Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP)
  • West KL Traffic Dispersal Scheme (SPRINT)
  • Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS)
  • SMART Tunnel
  • Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Expressway (MEX)
  • Sungai Besi Highway
  • New Pantai Expressway (NPE)
  • Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Expressway (AKLEH)
  • Guthrie Corridor Highway
  • Penang Bridge
  • Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE)

The introduction of the open toll payment system is part of the government's broader initiative to offer motorists a variety of toll payment methods. This system complements existing methods like RFID, Touch 'n Go cards, and SmartTag, thereby enhancing the user experience and encouraging the adoption of new payment technologies.

This initiative is not only about convenience but also about improving traffic management. By providing multiple payment options, the system aims to reduce the bottlenecks often seen at toll plazas, leading to smoother and quicker commutes. It reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve infrastructure and public services.

Furthermore, the integration of credit and debit card payments aligns with global trends where digital and cashless transactions are increasingly becoming the norm. This shift is expected to benefit both local commuters and international travelers who may not have local payment methods like Touch 'n Go or RFID but can use their international cards.

In conclusion, the expansion of the Open Payment Toll Collection System to additional highways is a significant step towards modernizing Malaysia’s toll payment infrastructure. It provides motorists with greater flexibility, reduces congestion, and supports the broader move towards cashless transactions. As this system continues to grow, Malaysian highways are set to become more efficient and user-friendly, ensuring a smoother journey for all.
