Soap actor and wife die after being pulled from burning home

  • Actor Paul Avery, best known for playing Hughie in the US soap opera All My Children, and his wife Sheila Avery have died in a fire at their home in Blairstown, New Jersey.
  • Emergency responders found the couple unconscious after being called to their residence shortly after 12.38am on Tuesday.
  • They were pulled from the burning property by firefighters and given CPR, but died from their injuries shortly afterwards.
  • Authorities have said that the cause of the fire, which was declared under control at 1.03 am, is currently under investigation.
  • Beyond his 20-year acting career, Avery also worked as a journalist and editor in New Jersey, co-founding the Ridge View Echo, and served on the Blairstown township committee.
