Sogip power project to meet the needs of Esteel plant

Kota Kinabalu: The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) clarified that the 200MW power plant under construction at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip) is solely to meet the electricity needs of the Esteel plant and will not supply power to the Sabah Grid.

ECoS said the clarification was issued following a news report on July 10 titled “200MW Sogip Power Plant Expected to be Completed in the Third Quarter of 2027” to avoid public confusion.

It said the 200MW self-generation power plant was being developed specifically to supply electricity to the Esteel plant currently under construction in Sogip.

ECoS, in a statement, also said a new 100MW gas-fired power plant in Kimanis is in the final stage of development and is expected to begin supplying electricity to the Sabah Grid in August this year.

In addition, two more gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 200MW in Kimanis were approved by the Sabah Energy Council this year and are expected to commence operations by the end of 2028.

The commission said these projects, together with other planned power generation developments, would strengthen the Sabah Grid’s generation capacity and support a reliable electricity supply at affordable rates in the years ahead.

ECoS hoped the clarification would provide the public with an accurate understanding of the role of the Sogip power plant.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring information on Sabah’s energy sector development is communicated accurately, transparently and based on facts.
