KUALA LUMPUR – The Speedy Tigers have begun a new chapter under head coach Brendon Carolan, with music now becoming a regular feature of the national squad’s training sessions.
The newly appointed coach has introduced music into every session as part of an effort to create a more vibrant and engaging atmosphere, aimed at keeping players motivated through the demands of daily training.
Speaking to Scoop, Carolan said the move goes beyond simply making sessions more enjoyable, stressing that it is intended to maintain intensity while improving the players’ mental sharpness and overall mood.
“Training can be intense – players are on the field every day, often twice a day, and the work is relentless,” said Carolan.
“I wanted to find a way to make the sessions more enjoyable, to create an atmosphere where players are energised, focused, and having fun while still working hard. Music is the perfect tool for that. It lifts spirits, keeps energy levels high, and helps players stay mentally sharp throughout the session.”
Drawing on his coaching experience in Europe, Carolan said the use of music in training is a well-established practice rather than a novelty.
“I wouldn’t say it’s anything unique,” he explained.
“In Europe and at the schools I’ve worked at, it’s very common to have music during training. It helps set the tone, motivates players, and creates a positive environment. But even if it’s common elsewhere, it’s something new for our team here, and I’m excited to see how it changes the energy on the pitch.”
He said the impact is also practical, with a better atmosphere often translating into improved standards on the field.
“When players enjoy themselves, the quality of training improves. They stay engaged, they work harder, and time passes faster. Even a few upbeat tracks can completely change the mood on the field. It’s a small adjustment, but it can have a massive impact on the team’s mindset and energy levels,” said Carolan.
The South African also believes the approach can strengthen unity within the squad.
“It’s amazing how music brings people together. You see the players moving in sync, smiling, and feeding off each other’s energy. That camaraderie carries over into the drills, the matches, and ultimately, the results.
“My goal is to build a team that trains hard but enjoys every minute of it – and music is a key part of that.”
Despite the lighter atmosphere, Carolan’s objectives remain ambitious, with a place in the Nations Cup final in Cape Town from June 11 to 20 firmly in his sights.
The tournament will mark his first assignment since taking charge on a one-year contract, while also offering Malaysia an opportunity to rebound from last year’s disappointing sixth-place finish under former coach Sarjit Singh.
Carolan also underlined that selection remains open, making it clear that no player in the current 26-man squad can take his place for granted.
With a refreshed mood in camp and a new training philosophy taking shape, Malaysia will hope the positive energy translates into improved performances on the international stage. - April 7, 2026
