TAWAU: The completion of the Southern grid estimated on 2030 will prove its usefulness in ensuring a better transmission and connectivity of electricity as it plays an important component in stabilizing power supply.
Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) Akmal Nasrullah Mohd. Nasir said failure of the grid system could not be avoided especially when natural disaster struck regardless of the efforts initiated.
`This South grid will ensure that we have a back-up connection instead of just relying on the current sole connection grid’, he said after a working visit to the district last Tuesday.
Akmal said the state Energy Commission (ECoS) has been handed the task of monitoring the project since 2024 which was implemented in two phases.
During the working visit, Akmal visited two power substations and one water supply scheme phase III in the district to observe the work progress made and seek for their completion based on the projected timeline.
The district and other districts in the East Coast of Sabah faced a severe power and water supply disruption recently when a tower in the grid system collapsed due to a landslide incident.
Akmal during the visit went to a site where power and water theft took place citing precautionary measures must be taken as a single simple theft will affect hundreds if not thousands of users.
