KUALA LUMPUR – Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) is prepared to do whatever it takes to retain Bergson Da Silva, including offering him a substantial contract to deter interest from overseas clubs.
Reports indicated that 34-year-old Bergson, who has scored an impressive 150 goals in 141 matches for the Southern Tigers, is now being pursued by Sport Club do Recife, a club in Brazil's Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.
A source familiar with the matter told Scoop that the Brazilian's existing contract is set to end this year, and the club is looking to extend it, possibly for an additional two years.
"He has been the club's most valuable player since he joined in 2021. His impressive goal record has helped the club secure numerous major titles."
"The offer from Brazil is a good one, but it doesn't compare to what he currently makes at JDT. The club is working on finalising either a one- or two-year contract extension, and his new salary will definitely be higher than what he earns now.
“He's only a few months away from being eligible to play for Harimau Malaya, and the club is in the process of finalising that.
“If he moves to Recife now, it would completely reset his eligibility, and he wouldn't be able to play for Harimau Malaya as a naturalised player.
“With the chance to join the national team in sight, the possibility of winning more titles with JDT, and a tempting new offer coming up, it seems unlikely that Bergson will leave the Southern Tigers anytime soon.”
Bergson has so far won 13 trophies with JDT during his four-year spell with the club. - June 29, 2025
