Spain v Cape Verde LIVE: World Cup debutants earn famous draw against struggling La Roja

Spain were held to a goalless draw in their opening World Cup fixture after a brilliant performance from Cape Verde held the European champions to a 0-0 result.

Spain’s dominance in possession and chanc es could not beat the defensive heroics of goalkeeper Vozinha who had an incredible outing in between the sticks denying Ferran Torres and keeping out 27 attempts from La Roja. 15 of those came from insiude the penalty area where defensive duo Diney Borges and Pico Lopes held steadfast against the tricky footwork of the Spanish attackers.

Despite Spain’s control they lacked creativity and not even the reinforcements of substitutes Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams were enough to force a winner for the Spanish. Cape Verde, on their World Cup debut, took a famous point away from the clash in Atlanta and will now have their sights on making it out of Group H.

How Spain have developed ‘tiki-taka 2.0’ in pursuit of World Cup glory

19:40 , Chris Wilson

The very nature of the World Cup means that any team that wins it will go down among the ‘best’ ever, though a select few teams manage to transcend whatever happens on the pitch during those seven – now eight – games.

For those of a certain age, Brazil’s World Cup-winning side of 1970 will jump to mind; for others, the Spain dynasty of 2008 to 2012 is the most famed international team.

In South Africa in 2010, there was something in the air as tiki-taka became the era’s definitive style of play, with one of the most skilled football teams of all time deservedly lifting the biggest prize in the sport.

World Cup 2026 fixtures, results and group tables

19:28 , Chris Wilson

The World Cup sees 48 nations divided into 12 groups for the first time in the tournament’s long history.

Co-hosts Mexico, USA and Canada are the top seeds in Groups A, B and D respectively, while Scotland are in Group C with Brazil, Morocco and Haiti, and England are all the way down in Group L with Croatia, Ghana and Panama.

The top two sides in each group will qualify for the World Cup’s first ever round of 32, as will the eighth best third-place teams. Just three points could be enough for some teams to reach the knockout stages.

There will be 104 matches, up 40 since Qatar World Cup 2022, while Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo likely to play on this stage for the last time in their glittering careers.

Spain stunned as debutants Cape Verde earn battling point in World Cup shock

19:22 , Chris Wilson

Cape Verde pulled off the shock of the World Cup so far as they held European champions Spain to a battling goalless draw in their Group H opener in Atlanta.

Despite seeing plenty of possession in the first half, Luis De La Fuente’s team – who started with Lamine Yamal on the bench – were unable to break down a determined Cape Verde defence, as Ferran Torres hit the crossbar from close range.

Veteran Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha produced a fine reaction save to deny Torres and then tipped away Aymeric Laporte’s glancing header from a corner as the World Cup debutants got into half-time on level terms.

Match stats

19:19 , Chris Wilson

Vozinha made seven saves for Cape Verde in this match in what was a man of the match performance.

Since 1966, the only goalkeeper aged 40+ to make more saves in a World Cup game was Pat Jennings on his 41st birthday for Northern Ireland against Brazil in 1986 (10).

“I'm a bit emotional. It's absolutely fantastic. A brilliant performance. They deserve that point more than anything and Spain almost don't deserve a point. They walk off disappointed but the night is Cape Verde's,” says Lee Dixon on ITV.

“What a performance from every single one of them, the centre halves, the full-backs, that man there [Vozinha] crying - I'm almost crying myself,” he added.

Here’s what else we have in store this evening then:

Group G: Belgium vs Egypt, kick-off 8pm - Seattle, USA

Group G: Iran vs New Zealand, kick-off 2am - Los Angeles, USA

That result of course leaves both teams on one point ahead of Uruguay facing Saudi Arabia later on.

Cape Verde will be busy celebrating the win and while they won’t get ahead if themselves, a win over Saudi Arabia would probably give them a place in the last 32!

Cape Verde launch a counter-attack and it’s worked back before the shot is deflected narrowly wide.

CLOSE! What a block this is from Lopes!

Yamal clips a lovely ball into the path of Olmo, who takes it down and turns to lay it off to Oyarzabal.

Great work from Semedo as he wins the ball midway into his half and does enough to take his side into Spain territory before winning a throw. That will give Cape Verde breathing space.

Ruiz clips a ball into the box but Vozinha is off his line well to claim it.

Cape Verde look to find Livramento in behind the Spain defence but Simon is off his line well.

18:16 , Chris Wilson

53 mins

Another inventive bit of play or a total accident?

Gavi wins the ball high and it breaks kindly for Oyarzabal, who seemingly tries to catch out Vozinha, who had moved up towards his penalty spot anticipating a cross.

The effort flies wide of the post anyway but the replay suggest he might have been trying to find Torres in the middle and just messed up the pass!

Spain are beginning to turn the screw in Atlanta.

Another good cross is glanced towards goal but the header is all wrong and Llorente collects before Ruiz curls an effort over.

HALF-TIME! Spain 0-0 Cape Verde

18:03 , Chris Wilson

It’s been a great first half from a Cape Verde point of view, with the minnows marking their World Cup debut with a promising performance that’s shown plenty of discipline. They’ll feel they can give anyone a game at the moment!

Spain have not played badly at all either, and while Cape Verde are lucky to not be behind after that miss from Torres, it’s been a display they can be proud of so far.

As for La Roja, they’ve put together some slick moves but just haven’t found the final touch so far.

Let’s hope for more of the same in the second half!

CLOSE! Another good chance for Spain as they work it around the Cape Verde box before it’s cut back to Ferran Torres.

OFF THE BAR! Spain 0-0 Cape Verde

40 mins

OFF THE BAR! Brilliant stuff from Spain and they should be ahead.

La Roja tear open their opponents courtesy of a lovely clipped diagonal pass from Rodri across to Cucurella.

The left-back is in behind the defence and lays it back off to Torres, who has plenty of goa to aim for but blasts against the bar from five yards out!

From the rebound, Oyarzabal looks to loop in a header but Vozinha gets back up in time to tip it over the bar!

A great save from Vozinha to tip over the effort from distance but the flag had gone up anyway.

At the other end, Lopes Cabral sees an opening but he blasts well wide.

What a moment that would have been! Rodri doesn’t see Livramento behind him and the striker dispossesses him in the centre circle before trying to lob Unai Simon in goal!

32 mins

Just a timely reminder for Spain there as Duarte clips a great long ball to Mendes, who had got in behind Cucurella.

However, the flag goes up as the Cape Verde captain had strayed offside.

Moments later, Lopes Cabral is scythed down by Torres to give Cape Verde some breathing space. The Benfica man has been impressive so far.

An interesting shirt number here as it appears Gavi has been given the number nine for this tournament! A new meaning for ‘false nine’.

There’s some brilliant play from Sidny Cabral to win possession before skipping past Llorente – he’s brought down in cynical fashion but Llorente somehow escapes a booking.

There have been a couple of loose passes in the final third from Spain, with Fabian Ruiz the latest guilty party.

It will be interesting to see who is used as a striker for La Roja during this tournament now that Alvaro Morata is not in the squad. Mikel Oyarzabal has started there this evening, though might that change in other games?

Spain's World Cup chances

16:46 , Chris Wilson

Luis de la Fuente’s side begin the tournament as favourites after a hugely successful last few years that started with a victorious Euro 2024 campaign two summers ago. La Roja have been in fine form since beating England in Berlin, losing just once – in the 2025 Nations League final, on penalties to Portugal.

Spain have not come close to winning football’s biggest prize since their famed campaign of 2010, but there is a feeling at home that this squad is the best equipped to do so since the days of Iniesta, Xavi and co. After exiting the tournament at the round of 16 stage to Morocco in Qatar, a semi-final berth would be the minimum expectation this time round, but in private there might be questions asked if this side doesn’t go all the way.

Many of the same names from the 2024 squad will be present in North America this summer. De la Fuente has already made a bold move in selecting a squad devoid of any Real Madrid players, with both Dani Carvajal and Dean Huijsen left at home as La Roja go for a blend of experience and youthful verve. Lamine Yamal will once again be the focal point of the squad, supported by the likes of Rodri, Pedri and Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored the winner in Berlin two years ago.

There are some questions over defensive options and the fit of some of the attackers in the squad, but if de la Fuente can successfully adapt the game plan used in 2024, Spain may well end this summer with another star over the famous crest.

“I’ll say that they’ll have an amazing World Cup” says former Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara on his nation’s chances.

Yama & Williams on bench for Spain

16:27 , Chris Wilson

Perhaps unsurprisingly – given their respective injury issues – both Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams are on the bench this afternoon.

The wing duo may have sat part of this one out anyway given that there are more difficult games to come soon, though Luis de la Fuente has gone with a strong line-up nonetheless.

Most eyes will probably be on how Ferran Torres and Mikel Oyarzabal perform in their respective attacking roles.

Mikel Merino wary not to overlook opponents

16:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

“I think people now see us as real trophy contenders,” Arsenal midfielder Merino said on match eve. “We should draw confidence and energy from it, and make sure we don’t get complacent. If that’s how everyone sees us, then it’s because we’ve earned it and we should believe in ourselves. We shouldn’t be overconfident, though, or feel that we’re automatically better than anyone else. Any side can beat you on their day, but it should fuel our self-belief. If we play our best football, we can beat anyone.”

Hope for Cape Verde?

16:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Spain corrected a concerning trend at the last World Cup of being slow starters at the tournament. A 7-0 win over Costa Rica was their first opening-round success since 2002, with a draw with 3-3 Portugal (2018) following defeats to the Netherlands (2014) and Switzerland (2010). Not that it mattered in the end in South Africa, of course.

Cape Verde look to rise to the challenge

Cape Verde manager Bubista is hopeful his side can rise to the challenge as they make their World Cup bow in Atlanta.

"We want to show what we did during qualifier,” he said. “We want to compete with our identify and to play all of our matches with courage and organisation to show the world what we are as a team and as a country. We know how difficult it will be and we are aware of Spain's value, but the game is still played on the pitch."

Clash of contrasts

15:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This, incidentally, is only the fifth biggest rankings mismatch at this World Cup – on paper, that is. There are 65 places between Spain in second and Cape Verde in 67th on the official Fifa table, and the archipelagic nation feel upwardly mobile. They were Afcon quarter-finalists in 2023, of course, and will hope to push Spain hard in their first meeting.

Spain embracing expectations ahead of World Cup opener

15:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente believes his side are ready to handle the expectation that comes with entering the World Cup as European champions.

"There is excitement, hunger… They’re very competitive players, determined to always do things right," De la Fuente said. "They're aware how important this moment is for them at the World Cup. Several are making their debut.

“Nothing in life can compare to the feeling of taking on a challenge head-on with excitement, purpose and determination. That's something I think really stands out about this squad and these players. If they’re feeling like that, you can imagine how I feel."

What to know about the Cape Verde squad?

14:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Dublin-born Shamrock Rovers centre-back Roberto Lopes, who first received an international call-up when the manager contacted him via LinkedIn, is part of Cape Verde’s squad for their first-ever World Cup. Coach Bubista has also taken a gamble on the fitness of centre-back Logan Costa, who played limited minutes for Villarreal at the end of the season in his first action since rupturing his ACL last July, while San Diego goalkeeper CJ dos Santos is the only uncapped player in the squad after having a switch of allegiance from the US approved by Fifa recently.

Coach: Bubista

Goalkeepers: Vozinha (Chaves), Marcio Rosa (Montana), CJ dos Santos (San Diego)

Defenders: Stopira (Torreense), Roberto Lopes (Shamrock Rovers), Joao Paulo (FCSB), Diney (Al Bataeh), Logan Costa (Villarreal), Steven Moreira (Columbus Crew), Wagner Pina (Trabzonspor), Sidny Lopes Cabral (Benfica), Kelvin Pires (SJK)

Midfielders: Jamiro Monteiro (PEC Zwolle), Kevin Pina (Krasnodar), Deroy Duarte (Ludogorets), Telmo Arcanjo (Vitoria Guimaraes), Laros Duarte (Puskas Akademia), Yannick Semedo (Farense)

Forwards: Ryan Mendes (Igdir), Garry Rodrigues (Apollon Limassol), Willy Semedo (Omonia), Jovane Cabral (Estrela Amadora), Gilson Tavares (Akron Tolyatti), Dailon Livramento (Casa Pia), Helio Varela (Maccabi Tel Aviv), Nuno da Costa (Istanbul Basaksehir)

Spain boss Luis De La Fuente has revealed Lamine Yamal is in “perfect condition” following injury concerns.

The teenager has been sidelined since April with a hamstring problem and subsequently missed the final stages of Barcelona’s La Liga-winning season.

Spain kick off their Group H campaign against Cape Verde in Atlanta and De la Fuente provided an update on Yamal along with the rest of the squad ahead of their opening game.

“The best news is that he’s in perfect condition,” De La Fuente said. “The process we had planned has gone as expected and he’s arrived at the scheduled time.

“I can tell you that everyone will be available. That doesn’t mean they’ll be ready for the whole match, but the best news is that they’re in good form.”
