European champions Spain continued their pursuit of global glory on Thursday, as they eased through a World Cup test against Austria in the round of 32.
Mikel Oyarzabal was on the scoresheet twice for the European champions in a 3-0 win, tucking away two tidy strikes either side of a Pedro Porro header, and guiding Spain into the last 16. There, Portugal or Croatia will await.
These goals followed a controversial moment in which Marc Cucurella had a goal ruled out due to an alleged foul on Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager. But that meant little in the end, as Luis de la Fuente’s side progressed at the expense of Ralf Rangnick’s in Los Angeles.
In doing so, Spain secured their first knockout win at the World Cup since 2010, when they lifted the trophy for the only time in their nation’s history.

Yamal magic
23:40 , Alan SmithYamal became the third youngest player of the match award winner in World Cup history after his performance against Austria.
Oyarzabal hails 'very good day'
23:30 , Alan Smith"I'm happy to help the team and to get through another round. [It was] a difficult game. We knew it'd be difficult as they're a very physical team. But we've had a very good day,” Mikel Oyarzabal says after scoring another two goals.
Alaba: Hydration break hurt us
23:20 , Alan Smith"For the first 20-25 minutes we were OK but after the first break, I think they [Spain] changed a bit and then it became more difficult for us,” the Austria captain told DAZN. “They are very strong with the ball. They have a lot of the ball and after 90 minutes it’s difficult to [just] run after the ball. They have players who have a lot of quality and are very dangerous.”
'These players want more'
23:10 , Alan SmithLuis de la Fuente, speaking to RTVE, says that his team are stepping up when it matters.
“The big teams turn up when their presence is needed,” he said. “I think today we’ve seen a great game. I’m happy because in all aspects we’ve been almost perfect – but we have to keep improving. Every match now is going to be very difficult. In the last 16, the opponents are now even more demanding … You can always improve and on top of that, it’s what this team demands. These players always want more and more. [Oyarzabal] showed the footballing potential he has – and the rest of his team-mates exactly the same. They played an extraordinary match.”
Up next
23:00 , Alan SmithNow Spain wait to see who they will face on Monday in Dallas.
It will be Portugal or Croatia, who are about to meet in Toronto with kick-off at midnight BST.

A routine win for Luis de la Fuente's side, with Mikel Oyarzabal becoming the first Spain player to score at least two goals in a men's World Cup knockout match since Emilio Butragueño (4) against Denmark in the round of 16 in 1986. pic.twitter.com/uh1jZTTxBW
Simon's stats continued
22:30 , Alan SmithSpain didn't allow a shot on target versus Austria, which Opta says is the first time a team haven’t allowed one in a knockout match since Germany in the 2014 final.
Are you watching, France? Spain are peaking at just the right time
22:29 , Kieran Jackson at Los Angeles StadiumWhile all the big-hitters around them experience a glut of goals and drama, depending on which way you glance, Spain continue their methodical and altogether stress-free path to the latter stages of the World Cup. Sure, they are lacking France’s all-out firepower. Sure, they are lacking a leading talisman in Argentina’s Lionel Messi or England’s Harry Kane. But as a cohesive unit, ticking over possession and grounding their opposition into submission, there is still no collective well-rounded team better at this World Cup 2026 than La Roja.
Are you watching, France? This is why Spain are peaking at just the right time
Long wait ended
22:20 , Alan SmithAccording to Miguel Delaney that is the first goal scored by a Spain player in a knockout tie since Andres Iniesta in the 2010 final. There was an own goal against Russia in 2018. It was also the first time they have scored more than once in a knockout match since 1994.

Rocks at the back
22:02 , Alan SmithLet’s not forget that Spain are yet to concede a goal at this World Cup.
The attack are hogging the limelight, as always, but they have been impenetrable at the back.
At full-time they shook the hands of their opponents, quickly applauded the fans and walked off. No Wonderwall singing here.
Full-time! Spain 3-0 Austria
21:59 , Alan SmithThat’s that for Austria, who head home after being massively outclassed.
Spain advance and when the winner of Portugal or Croatia watch this back they will be rather fearful indeed.
Spain 3-0 Austria
21:57 , Alan Smith94’ - This is being uber picky but Torres has wasted being in excellent positions several times since coming and appears to be a massive downgrade on Baena in this form. The most recent attempt is a scuffed attempt across goal and wide.
Spain 3-0 Austria
21:54 , Alan Smith93’ - Pubil replaces Laporte, Ruiz comes in for Pedri. In case you were wondering about Spain’s depth.
Spain 3-0 Austria
21:53 , Alan Smith90’ - There will be six added minutes. Too much time for Austria’s players, who are shattered.
GOAL! Spain 3-0 Austria (Oyarzabal 89)
21:52 , Alan SmithThis one is beautiful too. At the end of a long passing move, Cucurella actually mishits a low cross from the left, slipping as he strikes it, but it still goes straight into the path of Oyarzabal and, left completely unmarked, he taps in for a 16th goal in his past 17 appearances.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:50 , Alan Smith88’ - Only France have been able to toy with an opponent like Spain have here.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:48 , Alan Smith86’ - Prass is on for Posch, Austria’s final change.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:47 , Alan Smith85’ - Yamal has a shot cleared off the line by Alaba and the Austria captain then begins laying into Grillitsch over, presumably, missing a marking assignment.
That’s Yamal’s work done. Gavi is on for him. And Rosalia is back on screen again.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:45 , Alan Smith83’ - Posch is booked for pulling Cucurella to the floor. The Spain player reacts as if he has been the victim of a grievous assault. Quite unlike him to overreact in search of an advantage.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:44 , Alan Smith82’ - Posch heads over after getting in front of Cucurella.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:43 , Alan Smith81’ - Spain pass, pass, pass and pass some more. Torres then tries to find Pedri but his feed is a little off target. Had he found his teammate and had he finished it would have been a jaw-dropping team move.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:41 , Alan Smith80’ - Chukwuemeka sends a shot wide. It’s hailed as Austria’s best move of the half despite not being much of a chance. That’s how little a sniff they have had here.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:40 , Alan Smith78’ - Yamal flings in a deep corner. Torres tries to head goalwards but sends it off target when going back across goal to try and tee up a teammate appeared the better decision.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:39 , Alan Smith77’ - It ends up with a Merino cross being blocked but Spain have just put together a slick set of passes from Simon to the final third that cut through Austria like a hot knife through butter.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:37 , Alan Smith75’ - More signs of Austria frustration. Half a dozen players are involved in some pushing and nudging, the referee nips in to cool things down.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:36 , Alan Smith74’ - Arnautovic trips Rodri and then has a good moan at the referee.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:33 , Alan Smith71’ - Merino and Torres are on. Baena and Olmo are off.
Rosalia and Penelope Cruz pop up on screen to huge cheers.
Spain 2-0 Austria
21:34 , Alan Smith68’ - And that’s the hydration break! Spain have been electric. Now can they push on to score more?
GOAL! Spain 2-0 Austria (Porro, 66)
21:28 , Alan SmithAnd that should be that. The Spurs full-back heads in his first international goal, getting on the end of Baena’s cross from the left.
Spain 1-0 Austria
21:25 , Alan Smith63’ - Arnautovic and Simon collide, the latter winning a free kick because he is a goalkeeper. But it is the Austria player who is worse off, landing heavily after the Spain stopper leapt above him to head a long ball away.
Spain 1-0 Austria
21:23 , Alan Smith60’ - And within a minute of coming on Kalajdzic’s first touch is to head a nice Sabitzer cross narrowly over. That’s better from Austria.
Spain 1-0 Austria
21:22 , Alan Smith59’ - Another double change for Austria: Kalajdzic and Arnautovic are on, Schmid and Gregoritsch are off.
Spain 1-0 Austria
21:21 , Alan Smith59’ - Spain’s level of control right now is as close to complete as it can possibly be. Austria are unable to get out of their half and only touching the ball to hook clear. Spain keep coming back at them, a blur of pass-move-pass-move.
Spain 1-0 Austria
21:19 , Alan Smith57’ - Yamal is fine to continue. And he has now had a lovely exchange of passes with Porro that almost sets the underlapping full-back away.
Spain 1-0 Austria
21:17 , Alan Smith55’ - Posch goes into the back of Baena and commits a foul. On the opposite side Yamal goes down and it’s not immediately clear why.
Spain 1-0 Austria
21:16 , Alan Smith54’ - Rodri has a go from far out. It’s deflected for a corner, Spain’s eighth. Baena’s delivery is this time headed away by Gregoritsch.
Spain 1-0 Austria
21:15 , Alan Smith53’ - Chukwuemeka gives the ball away, allowing Spain to deliver wave after wave of attack. Danso and Alaba both make interventions in dangerous areas but there is no outlet right now and every time they clear it leads to a fresh Spain charge.
Spain 1-0 Austria
21:13 , Alan Smith51’ - Olmo wins a corner which Baena pings in. Oyarzabal heads it over.
Spain 1-0 Austria
21:11 , Alan Smith49’ - Yamal dances in from the wing but runs out room and then fouls Sabitzer.
A few shots later Oyarzabal shoots from range and Schlager saves well.
Restarted! Spain 1-0 Austria
21:08 , Alan SmithWe’re back underway.
Austria have made two changes - both in central midfield. Chukwuemeka and Grillitsch are on for Xaver Schlager and Seiwald, both of whom were overrun.
Spain good value for their lead
21:06 , Kieran Jackson in Los AngelesSo, what have you got, Austria?
Spain deservedly lead heading into the second-half and, really, they should be more than a goal up.
Can Austria make them pay for their wastefulness? A reminder: Spain have not conceded a goal yet at this World Cup.
Half-time! Spain 1-0 Austria
20:50 , Alan SmithAnd there’s the break.
Spain have been rather good, fully deserving of their lead.
Austria will be pleased that it is only 1-0 and remain in with a chance.
Spain 1-0 Austria
20:48 , Alan Smith47’ - Baena takes the free kick himself. It dips and swerves and is full of power but it comes off the bar. Austria fail to clear and Yamal then sends a left-footed strike into the stomach of Schlager.
Spain 1-0 Austria
20:46 , Alan Smith45’ - There will be four added minutes.
Posch is whistled for a foul on Baena about 25 yards from goal.
Spain 1-0 Austria
20:45 , Alan Smith45’ - Sabitzer sends a nice diagonal pass forward that briefly flirts with causing a threat. It doesn’t and Spain can resume their domination.
Spain 1-0 Austria
20:42 , Alan Smith41’ - Spain are utterly dominant. Austria need to get to the break without conceding another. Baena wins their sixth corner, his cross blocked by Posch. The delivery is dealt with by Laimer, no doubt delighted to be momentarily freed from Yamal.
Spain strike first
20:40 , Kieran Jackson in Los AngelesPost-water break, that goal has been coming.
It’s a very simple goal: Cucurella’s accurate cross finds Oyarzabal, who sweeps the ball into the bottom-corner.
A well-deserved lead for the Spanish. The press-box, incidentally, could well be the Spanish fan section, such were the celebrations among some of my colleagues - who receive a prompt telling-off from a supervisor.
It’s only the last-32, people.
Spain 1-0 Austria
20:39 , Alan Smith38’ - Yamal turns Seiwald with ease just outside the box and then drills another shot at Schlager, who is becoming very, very busy.
GOAL! Spain 1-0 Austria (Oyarzabal 36)
20:37 , Alan SmithIt had been coming. Pedri plays a diagonal pass out to Cucurella and he flashes a swift, low cross in from the left for the Spain striker to finish nice and easily past Schlager.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:36 , Alan Smith36’ - Yamal nutmegs Laimer again but Alaba is on hand to clear.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:35 , Alan Smith34’ - Alaba, from a silly distance, shoots high and wide following a momentum-breaking spell of possession from Austria.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:33 , Alan Smith32’ - Spain are starting to motor.
Yamal sails past Laimer and from a very, very tight angle has a shot saved by Schlager.
Spain come again and Oyarzabal buys himself a yard from the edge of the box before shooting. Schlager saves pretty well, giving up another corner that is cleared.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:31 , Alan Smith29’ - Yet more VAR folly. Cucurella finds the net from the corner but there is an immediate whistle from the referee Nyberg, followed by a check. It appears it has been disallowed because of a foul on the goalkeeper after Schlager flapped at the ball under pressure from Cubarsi.
Spain are fuming and rightly so because Cubarsi leaped and did not commit any obvious foul.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:29 , Alan Smith26’ - Vital challenge Posch! Just as Olmo looks likely to pounce, the Austria full-back nips in to intercept, albeit giving away a corner.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:23 , Alan Smith23’ - Hydration break. The boos are loud, what with this being an air conditioned stadium with the roof closed.
Finely balanced so far
20:22 , Kieran Jackson in Los AngelesAs anticipated, Spain have the majority of the ball but Austria are holding firm and carving out openings on the break.
Lamine Yamal so far? After his first-minute burst and shot, quite quiet, though he did just sumptuously nut-meg Konrad Laimer on the right-hand side.
20 in, all-square.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:21 , Alan Smith21’ - Yamal nutmegs Laimer but is then tackled by Sabitzer. Parking two players on Spain’s star is working out OK so far.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:18 , Alan Smith18’ - A chance for Austria. Sabitzer floats a ball in from the left which Gregoritsch is not too far from meeting with his head. It goes out for a goal kick but that is one way Austria can potentially get at Spain here.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:17 , Alan Smith17’ - The lull continues. And that means there is now a Mexican Wave going around the arena. Not ideal for those of us hoping for fireworks from home.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:15 , Alan Smith15’ - The game has a lull. So on BBC, Danny Murphy is talking about his cat. The rest of the story goes as follows: they got him back after six or seven weeks but he was feral and couldn’t be integrated back into the family home so then went to a friend’s house in Preston and has since passed away. Rest in peace, Bob.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:12 , Alan Smith12’ - Baena, who has started well, wins a corner off Posch. Baena then drives the dead ball in but Laimer cuts it out and Sabitzer hoofs away.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:11 , Alan Smith11’ - Baena fizzes a pass to Olmo and he then tries to nutmeg Alaba. Such audacity sees the Austria captain foul his opponent.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:09 , Alan Smith8’ - Almost for Spain. Porro swings a cross in for Olmo to whack first time. It looks on target but Oyarzabal unknowingly blocks it.
A few seconds later Spain win a corner, then another that may actually have been a goal kick... and, yes, the decision is changed after a few seconds.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:06 , Alan Smith7’ - Into the seventh minute and Austria have had just short of 70% possession. That won’t be long in changing.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:05 , Alan Smith5’ - Yamal wins a corner, via Danso, after Austria give the ball away too easily. It is taken short and Austria win possession back.
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:04 , Alan Smith3’ - Spain’s high line will be worth keeping an eye on too. They are almost breached here following an Austrian break down the right - but Cubarsi does well to challenge and put the ball out for a throw in..
Spain 0-0 Austria
20:02 , Alan Smith2’ - Sixty-two seconds on the clock and Yamal is afforded too much space to break down the inside left. His shot is on target but scuffed a little and saved by Schlager.
How Austria press will define this game. Do it well and they can cause problems, overcommit and they will be beaten.
Kick-off! Spain 0-0 Austria
20:00 , Alan SmithWe’re underway in LA. Spain get us going, kicking from left to right. They are in red tops, dark blue shorts and socks.
Austria wear their white change strip.
Here come the teams
19:56 , Alan SmithIt’s time for the anthems and there seems to be a significantly greater number of Spain shirts in the stadium compared to Austria.

Humid in LA
19:48 , Kieran Jackson in Los AngelesQuick flight over from San Jose this morning to LAX and, let me tell you, it is stiflingly humid out there today.
And guess which muppet wore a dark blue t-shirt? Sweat patches all over the place heading into the (air-conditioned, thankfully) media centre.
Nonetheless, should be a good one this. Spain clear favourites but the Austrians not to be underestimated, me thinks.
Tonight's referee
19:45 , Alan SmithContinuing the European flavour, Swedish whistleman Glenn Nyberg is in charge tonight.
This is his third match of the tournament, following Ghana v Panama and Curacao v Ivory Coast.
His assistants are Mahbod Beigi and Andreas Soderkvist. Mauritania’s Dahane Beida is the fourth official.
Makes you think
19:40 , Alan Smith33 - Spain are 33 games unbeaten in all competitions. They've also won 33 matches at the FIFA World Cup, while manager Luis de la Fuente has 33 wins in all competitions with Spain.

Yamal's moment to shine
19:35 , Alan SmithWhile the rest of the game’s biggest names light up the tournament, we’re still waiting for Yamal to catch fire having arrived still recovering from injury.
Is this the day he really gets going?
Spain seek first knockout success for 16 years
19:30 , Harry Latham-CoyleSpain, of course, haven’t actually won a World Cup knockout game since the 2010 final – a group stage exit in 2014 was followed by round of 16 defeats at each of the last two tournaments.
The secrets behind the save: How goalkeepers decide World Cup penalty shootouts
19:20 , Harry Latham-CoyleThere is a not insignificant chance that penalties are required today, with both goalkeepers surely swotting up on their shootout strategies this week. With the help of a couple of experts, Miguel Delaney explains how the best shot-stoppers prepare:

David Alaba takes on familiar faces
19:10 , Harry Latham-CoyleOne man who will know plenty in the Spanish ranks is Austria captain David Alaba, who has recently concluded his five-year spell with Real Madrid. The versatile veteran has had a somewhat curious international career, featuring just about everywhere for his nation as they sought to get the best out of probably their finest talent. His job today will be stalling Lamine Yamal and co.

A surprisingly rare meeting
19:00 , Harry Latham-CoyleOne might have thought that Spain and Austria were relatively familiar foes from various Uefa qualifying pools, but this is actually a first meeting since 2009 for the pair. Those of a certain vintage might remember their encounter during the 1978 World Cup, with Austria’s win helping them into the second group stage.
Team news on the way
18:40 , Harry Latham-CoyleRight, we should have team news relatively sharp-ish from Los Angeles. Who will join Lamine Yamal in Spain’s front three?
Spain close to full fitness for knockout test
18:30 , Harry Latham-CoyleSpain coach Luis de la Fuente said his talent-rich squad was ready to face Austria in their World Cup last-32 match on Thursday with Lamine Yamal, Victor Munoz and Yeremy Pino all available for selection.
"What I am seeing this week is that the team is beginning to recognise things to fix in their results so far”, De la Fuente suggested.
Lamine Yamal's game time has been managed carefully so far in the tournament, but De la Fuente said he was now available to play for as much of the match as required. The Barcelona forward has been eased through the tournament after an April hamstring tear, while Pino has recovered from a left shoulder sprain and Munoz is fit again after a muscle injury, though he has not competed for some time.
Portugal or Croatia next for the winner
18:20 , Harry Latham-CoyleToday’s victor will face another in-continent foe with Portugal and Croatia set to battle a little later. Ahead of that one, Richard Jolly takes a look at the contrasting fortunes of Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo as the former teammates clash:

About today's venue
18:10 , Harry Latham-CoyleWe’re in Los Angeles today, with Spain and Austria just starting to ready themselves at the ground usually known as SoFi Stadium. The sparkling arena will host one of the quarter-finals and has a capacity of 70,000.
Who will win the World Cup? HAVE YOUR SAY
18:00 , Harry Latham-CoyleAustria identify danger man
17:50 , Harry Latham-CoyleAustria coach Ralf Rangnick said football fans around the world love watching Lamine Yamal play – but stopping the Spain winger from showcasing his talent will be one of his side's top priorities.
Spain have eased the 18-year-old back into action after he tore a hamstring in April, limiting him to 141 minutes over the three group games, during which he scored once.
"Lamine Yamal is an excellent player, and he will be for the next 12, 13 or 14 years, maybe even longer," Rangnick said. "If he stays healthy and keeps a straight head on his `shoulders, he can play a lot of matches.
"He is one of the players we will watch very closely tomorrow, not to give him a lot of room or too many opportunities to start his dribbling actions. He is a player that all football fans, no matter where they are from, love to watch. But it is our task tomorrow to let him have the ball as little as possible."
‘Totally undaunted’ and the world at his feet: Welcome to the era of Lamine Yamal

12:25 , Harry Latham-CoyleSpain and Austria battle for a round of 16 place in an intriguing knockout clash at the World Cup. An opening draw with Cape Verde did not prevent the European champions from topping their group, but this could be a tricky test for Luis de la Fuente’s team against an experienced and high-quality Austrian outfit.
