Dewan Rakyat Speaker reminds MPs to prioritise regular health checks after an MP was hospitalised at the National Heart Institute.

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul today reminded Members of Parliament to undergo regular health screenings after an MP was hospitalised at the National Heart Institute (IJN).

He issued the reminder before the start of the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat.

Johari said the annual health screening programme for MPs would continue this year in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), after being implemented since 2023.

“Honourable Members, please pay attention to this and take it seriously. Yesterday, we had an MP who suffered a serious health problem and is now receiving treatment at IJN.

“These health screenings are invaluable in detecting any health issues affecting Honourable Members at an early stage, enabling immediate preventive and proactive measures through lifestyle modifications, medication or appropriate early medical intervention,” he said.

Johari also expressed his appreciation to all MPs who had undergone health screenings under the programme, as well as to the MOH for its support, commitment and close cooperation in implementing the initiative.

Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim was rushed to the IJN after suffering a health problem while at Parliament yesterday.

In a statement, the Kuala Terengganu MP’s office said the incident occurred while he was attending Minister’s Question Time and was scheduled to participate in the debate on the motion on the 2024 Annual Report of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia.
