KUALA LUMPUR — What began as a handful of parents signing up their special-needs children for weekend runs has now grown into a movement.
The group, calling themselves the Incredible Warrior, is set to make its presence felt at the National Press Club Malaysia’s Jom Jalan with NPC 2025 on November 29 at Padang Merbok.
The initiative, led by parents of children with autism and physical disabilities, has been life-changing for both the youngsters and their families.
“The group was formed last year. We decided to form this group as we saw the benefits of taking our children to running events,” said organiser Rezza Norlilyazreen, whose seven-year-old son is autistic, as quoted by Twentytwo13.
“My child can utter words and is more sociable, unlike before. These activities have given our children confidence, and as parents, we see the impact every day,” she added.
Today, the Incredible Warrior brings together about 30 children, accompanied by parents and guardians, to outdoor events across the Klang Valley. Their presence at Padang Merbok will once again symbolise inclusion and acceptance as they join the 5km fun walk at Jom Jalan with NPC 2025.
Organised by the NPC and sanctioned by the Federal Territories Athletics Association (FTAA), the event aims to popularise walking and nurture fresh talent in racewalking.
The programme offers two categories: a 10km competitive race walk with Men’s Open, Women’s Open, and Boys’ and Girls’ (13–17) divisions; and a 5km fun walk open to the general public.
Rezza said the group’s participation goes beyond sport — it is about dignity and belonging.
“Prior to taking part in such events, our children felt they were not wanted, and not treated fairly by the community. But ever since joining, they feel normal, accepted, and part of society. This means the world to us as parents,” she said.
