An actress who appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home has died aged 82.
Mary Egida Rivera, who played Ned Leeds’ grandmother opposite Jacob Batalon in the 2021 film, was said to have been “very proud” of her appearance.
She died “peacefully” on April 15 in Honolulu, Hawaii, according to her obituary.
She is survived by her husband Alejandro Rivera, four children, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The actress appeared in one of the most memorable scenes from the third film in the Tom Holland superhero franchise, when Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker emerges from the multiverse and meets Ned and Zendaya’s MJ to help them save their universe’s Spider-Man.
The two best friends ask him to climb across the ceiling to prove that he really is Spider-Man, before Lola, the Filipino word for grandmother, cuts in and asks him to clean a cobweb from a hard-to-reach corner of the room.
As Ned and MJ try to find their own Peter Parker, Tobey Maguire, who played the superhero in the original 2000s’ films, also appears and joins the gang.
The film was followed by the recently released Spider-Man: Brand New Day, in which Holland, Zendaya and Batalon reprised their roles.
The film debuted at £688.5 million at the global box office, making it the second biggest opening weekend of all time.
Its opening weekend is second only to Avengers: Endgame, which grossed $1.22 billion (£905 million) when it was released in 2019.
The blockbuster, which marks Tom Holland’s fourth outing as the superhero, depicts Peter Parker in a world that has forgotten he is Spider-Man.
He continues to fight crime as his powers evolve and a dangerous new enemy emerges.
