Hosting the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Phnom Penh from 05-17 May, 2023 has really awakened all people in the Kingdom of Cambodia to the importance of sports in developing the nation's economy, and what sports means for the legacy of a country. more than 8,000 athletes across 40 sports from the region had participated competitively.

The original rationale for SEA Games was that a regional sports event would promote cooperation, understanding and mutual relations among countries and people in the region. SEA Games have become a significant event in Southeast Asia's sporting culture. "Cambodia Pride" has been adopted as the official anthem of the 32nd SEA Games. With the Kingdom now enjoying stability and rapid development, "Sports: Live In Peace" was chosen as the theme to highlight peace has been crucial for its transformation.

Since its liberation in 1979 from the atrocious Khmer Rouge regime, which killed more than two million Cambodians, Prime Minister Hun Sen has aptly led Cambodia toward peace, reconciliation and economic transformation. He is a tireless advocate of sustainable peace and reconciliation, dialogue and understanding, as well as cooperation and development in Asia and the international community. The 32nd SEA Games was a fitting tribute to the Cambodian people whose indomitable spirit surmounted brutalities.

Prime Minister Hun Sen is an architect of peace and national reconciliation in Cambodia. He has served as the Prime Minister of Cambodia since 1985 when he was only 33 years old, the world's youngest prime minister at that time (Vrieze and Phann, 2012). His contributions to peace-building, political stability, national unity, economic growth, and social development are impressive. He is the defender of constitutional monarchy and regular democratic elections. Nowadays, his government is enhancing Cambodia's international roles by promoting international cooperation through bilateral & multilateral cooperation frameworks for mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and prosperity.

At the conclusion of the 2023 SEA Games, Vietnam emerged as the Champion with 135 gold medals, 105 silvers, and 118 bronzes. Thailand was next with 108 golds, 96 silvers, and 108 bronzes, followed by Indonesia in the 3rd place. Cambodia was in 4th place with 81 goals, 74 silvers, and 127 bronzes. Malaysia is in the 7th place.
