A week before Christmas, the air was filled with a sense of joy and anticipation at Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Mary KL in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, as members of the Malaysia Retail Chain Association Branding Education Charity Foundation (MRCA Foundation) visited the home to spread cheer among the children with a donation of RM20,000. This annual Christmas charity event is part of MRCA's ongoing commitment to community welfare.
The event was coordinated by MRCA council member and Head of CSR, Jordan Ng, and was spearheaded by secretariat member M. Kirthana. Their efforts reflected the true essence of Christmas --- compassion, sharing, and giving.
The occasion was graced by MRCA Branding Education Charity Foundation Chairman Dato Liaw Choon Liang, MRCA President Datuk Ken Phua, MRCA Lifetime Honorary Presidents Datuk Seri Garry Chua and Shirley Tay, along with other council members.
The children's enthusiastic response to the gesture served as a reminder of the powerful impact collective efforts can have, uplifting spirits and providing comfort during the joyous season.
In his address to the children and staff, Liaw expressed heartfelt sentiments. “To the children and staff, I want you to know that you are not alone. You are cherished and valued, and we hope this small gesture brings smiles to your faces and warmth to your hearts," he said in a media statement.
He further said, "Christmas is a time when even the smallest acts of love and compassion can create meaningful change. My deepest gratitude goes out to our foundation Trustees and Council Members for their roles in spreading this joy and hope.”
Adding to the spirit of the occasion, President Phua shared, “This visit is part of our tradition to support charity homes during all major festive seasons. We aim for our efforts to reach all communities, making each feel included,” emphasising that the MRCA has made similar donations during other festive celebrations like Hari Raya, Deepavali, and Chinese New Year.
Since its establishment in 2010 by then-President Dato’ Tay Sim Kim with an initial fund of RM1 million, the MRCA Foundation has symbolised the association's dedication to uplifting the community. It focuses on providing financial relief to the underprivileged, supporting medical and educational needs, recognising academic achievements within the MRCA community, and implementing schemes for the relief of human suffering.
Phua noted that the success of the 2024 Christmas Charity Visitation could not have been possible without the dedication and generosity of MRCA members. As the event wrapped up, the enduring commitment of the MRCA Foundation to foster a spirit of community support was clearly visible, setting a benchmark for meaningful business contributions to the community during the festive seasons.
Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Mary KL, named after its late founder Reverend Dr Mary Rayappan who established the home in 2003 for four abandoned children, continues to be a beacon of hope and care.
