It was that time of the year when families gather together for special occasions, a season filled with warmth, laughter, and the joy of gifting. Among the thoughtful presents I received, one stood out—a special edition Paralympic Phryge mascot. This item, though small in size, carries immense significance and evokes a deep sense of pride and inspiration.

This bright red Paralympic Phryge mascot, the official mascot of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, is a cheerful figure with a prosthetic leg. Part of a “tribe” of adorable, anthropomorphic hats, this special edition mascot is more than just a symbol; it represents resilience, determination, and the unyielding spirit of athletes who rise above challenges to compete on the global stage. For me, it is also a reminder of Sarawak’s incredible Paralympians and the profound contributions they have made to Malaysian sports.

The Paralympic mascot is unlike any other. Its vibrant design and distinct features reflect a commitment to inclusivity and perseverance. The unique prosthetic leg it proudly displays stands as a symbol of strength, showing the world that disabilities are not limitations but opportunities to showcase unparalleled courage. As I reflect on this, I am reminded of the Sarawak Paralympians who embody these values in their journey to represent Malaysia. Their stories of overcoming obstacles and achieving excellence are nothing short of extraordinary.

Last year, four Sarawakian Paralympians earned their qualification for the Paris 2024 Summer Paralympics. They are powerlifters like Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, who later on won a gold medal in the game, and Jong Yee Khie, swimmer Muhammad Nur Syaiful Zulkifli, and boccia para athlete Abdul Razzaq Abdul Rahman. Their qualification is a testament to their incredible talent and relentless dedication. Each of these athletes has faced unique challenges but has emerged stronger, carrying the hopes and dreams of our nation with them.

The Paralympic Games are more than just a competition; they are a celebration of the human spirit. They highlight the importance of inclusivity, resilience, and unity. For Malaysia, and particularly for Sarawak, these values resonate deeply. As a nation, we have a responsibility to support our Paralympic athletes, not just during the games but throughout their journeys. This includes advocating for better resources, recognising their achievements, and sharing their inspiring stories with the world.

Let the Paralympic Phryge mascot serve as a reminder for all of us to embrace challenges as opportunities, to support those who strive for greatness, and to celebrate the triumphs of the human spirit. Together, we can ensure that the legacy of our Paralympians continues to inspire generations to come.

To Sarawak’s Paralympians and all Malaysian athletes competing on the global stage, we salute you. Your perseverance and dedication are the true embodiment of #SpreadPositivity, and your stories remind us of what it means to dream big and overcome. Thank you for making us proud.
