South Africa fly half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is set to undergo scans on an ankle injury sustained in the Stormers’ win over Cardiff.
The Cape Town club progressed to the semi-finals of the United Rugby Championship after a 44-21 success at DHL Stadium, but victory may have come at a cost.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu was injured in the act of scoring a try and was later spotted on crutches, with head coach John Dobson suggesting the Springboks playmaker could face a long lay-off.
“It looks pretty serious, to be honest,” said Dobson of Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s injury. “He’s obviously going for a scan. The doctors have given me some feedback, but it looks like a proper ankle injury.
“He was cramping a bit before then and looked uncomfortable when he started running back. We haven’t confirmed anything yet, but it’s concerning.
“It’s a big blow. But whenever we take a knock, this group tends to pull together and fight. We’ve lost probably the most in-form young player in world rugby the week before a semi-final, which is far from ideal. But the way Jurie Matthee is playing and the fight in this squad gives me confidence that we’ll find a way.”
The 24-year-old has established himself as one of world rugby’s most exciting talents, and made the South Africa No 10 shirt his own during an excellent 2025.
Any possible absence would be a major blow to Rassie Erasmus ahead of a huge year of international action with the launch of the Nations Championship and inaugural Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand.
The Springboks begin their Nations Championship campaign against England in Johannesburg on 4 July, and also face Wales and Scotland in the new competition. They face the All Blacks in four Tests later in the year.
Back rower Kwagga Smith is another major injury doubt, with reports in Japan suggesting he has suffered a serious knee injury.
The Stormers will visit Leinster in their semi-final next Saturday, while Glasgow Warriors will host the Bulls.
