Sprinter Amy Hunt takes gold on opening day of European Athletics Championships

British sprinter Amy Hunt stormed to 100 metres gold on the first day of the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

The 24-year-old world 200m silver medallist beat defending champion and compatriot Dina Asher-Smith, who finished fifth in Monday night’s final, just after Great Britain secured their first medal of the championships with silver in the mixed 4x400m relay.

Hunt crossed the line in exactly 11 seconds, two hundredths of a second faster than Poland’s Ewa Swoboda, while Belgium’s Delphine Nkansa rounded out the podium.

There was also a glittering comeback for Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who came out on top in the men’s 5000m, his first race since last year’s world championships in Tokyo and subsequent Achilles surgery.
