The US State Department is trying to give the mother of Cape Verde hero Vozinha a visa so she can come and watch her son in action.

The 40-year-old was man of the match as he repelled European champions Spain in a shock 0-0 draw on Cape Verde's World Cup debut in Atlanta on Monday.

He cried on the pitch afterwards for his dead grandparents and said it was a shame his mother could not be in the US due to the cost of the visa.

CNN reported on Tuesday that the State Department is working to bring her to the US after a misunderstanding by the family about a $15,000 bond payment for visas.

"All relatives of players are eligible for visa bond waivers, and the Department is actively reaching out to this player’s family to assist with visa services,” the official said.

A source with knowledge of the situation also told CNN the mother did not even has a valid passport and was in the process of obtaining one.

Cape Verde play Uruguay in Group H on Sunday and Saudi Arabia next Friday.
